Water Valve Replacement Project
34th Street and Kerbey Lane
FAQs
Here are some commonly asked questions about the valve replacement project.

Q:  Why is the valve being replaced now? Is my water OK to drink?

A:  It is perfectly fine to drink your water. The City of Austin is replacing the water valve as part of routine maintenance. It is not being replaced because of any immediate problem or danger.

Water mains are the principal means of directing water throughout our city. These parts age over time, and rather than risk an unexpected failure, the Water Department replaces aging valves and pipes as part of a preventive maintenance plan.

Q:  What is the timeline for the valve replacement project?

A:  The City of Austin is conducting the project during the 2009 AISD Winter Break, so there will be less traffic congestion when work is performed in the intersection of 34th Street and Kerbey Lane. The timeline for the water valve replacement is below:

  • Preparation begins on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009
  • Three days of initial work
  • Break for Christmas day
  • Replace the valve on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009
  • Restoration of street Monday, Dec. 28, 2009 to Jan. 2, 2010

Q:  Will I have running water during the valve replacement?

A:  Yes, you will have water during the valve replacement. The project is not expected to affect the flow or quality of water to any residents.

Q:  What are the environmental implications of this project?

A:  The City of Austin and Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. are taking measures necessary to protect the natural environment of the Bryker Woods Neighborhood. This project is being constructed solely within the street right-of-way and will not adversely affect trees or vegetation. Water used to clean the water line will be properly dechlorinated before it is discharged in to the storm or wastewater system.

Q:  Will I be able to drive down 34th Street and Kerbey Lane?

A:  Yes. Two-way traffic will remain on 34th Street and Kerbey Lane. However, no parking will be permitted along the curbs of either street. Flaggers will be present to ease traffic congestion throughout the duration of the project.

Q:  Where can I get more information?

A:  For more information about the water valve replacement, you can attend the Bryker Woods Elementary PTA meeting on Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m.  If you are unable to attend the PTA meeting, you may contact Dedurie Kirk, the project manager with the City of Austin. She can be reached by phone at (512) 972-1062 or e-mail at dedurie.kirk@ci.austin.tx.us.
